Eric Shannon on Job Search Strategies and Tactics You probably havent heard of Eric Shannon. Hes a super cool guy, and really smart. Hes also been in the job board space for 20 years. Isnt that crazy? Ive had a few calls and emails with him over the years, and I respect everything hes shared with me. So now its my turn to share something awesome, from him, with you. Eric wrote a post titled Use big-ticket sales techniques to get in the game how to land the interview you want. This is one of the best posts Ive ever seen. Its deep, and kind of long, but its definitely a post I can stand behind. As a bonus, his followup is a post on how to land the job offer. Great stuff! Dont be a snob about career advice
Dont be a snob about career advice I have found that the best way to manage myself is by asking for a lot of help. The question is, how do you know who to take advice from? The answer is not always intuitive. For example, youd think that if Bill Gates wants to give you career advice, you should take it, right? I mean, the guys had a pretty decent career. The problem is that if he doesnt care about your career, hes going to give you generic advice. Here are five other counter-intuitive principles I have used to figure out who to listen to when it comes to my own career: Listen to people who hate you. People ask me all the time how I put up with the level of criticism this blog draws. The interesting thing about taking advice from people who dont like me is that sometimes, theyll say things that other people wouldnt say because it would hurt me. I rely on my gut in terms of whose criticism comes from caring and understanding and whose criticism comes from an obsessive need to take me down, but after I figure that out, I still pay attention to my critics. Stop thinking your issues are especially difficult. The most important piece of self-knowledge is that our problems are not unique. If you had problems no one else has, then no one will understand you enough to help you. But the truth is that its pretty easy to see what someone else should be doing if you have distance from a problem. So dont be a snob about who to take advice from. You dont need a career expert. You dont have the worlds most sophisticated problems. If you are articulate about framing your problem, most of your friends can give articulate, useful guidance for solving the problem. Less experience often means better advice. When it comes to finding a mentor, the most effective mentors are 3-5 years ahead of you in the workplace. Those are the people who have the best memory of what it was like to be where you are. In todays workplace this is especially true. The rules are changing so quickly, that many times someone who has a lot more experience than you do will also be out of touch with what the workplace is like today. I find that this is a big problem when people rely on their parents for advice. Be wary of people whose lives look perfect. Happiness researchers have known for a long time that if you ask people directly if they are happy in their career, most of the time theyll lie. This makes sense becuase if someone has invested tons of time in getting to where they are, its a really tough thing to say theyre unhappy; then theyd have to take action to change. So youre often better off just watching people. Many people hide their lives they want you to think things are going perfectly, and theyre always making great decisions, so they dont tell you the parts that are a mess. But sometimes, you come across people who are willing to show you the messy parts, and you can learn the most from these people. This is why I like reading about celebrities. They cant hide as much as non-celebrities, so I can learn more about what works and what doesnt. Stick with people who give you bad advice. If youre getting advice from someone who has never steered you wrong, then youre not asking this person enough questions. After a while, someone who has given you a lot of advice will falter. Because no one is perfect, and no one can do as well at running your life as you can. So if you find someone who is giving good advice, push harder, until you get to their limit. Everyone gives bad advice sometimes, even me. In some respects, bad advice might be better than good advice. Because what you really want is advice that makes you think in new ways about possibilities for yourself. So when it comes to taking advice, you still have to have your inner compass. You cant blame anyone else for where you end up. But, in a way, thats good news. Because if you are responsible for where you are, if you dont like it, you can get yourself to a new spot. This means that you should gather lots of advice, but be aware that sometimes, you need to ignore it. After all, what is the fun of life if we cant make our own mistakes?

Vice Chancellor @DMUVC To Organise Largest Flashmob For Charity Sometimes you see something and go: thats wicked! OK, maybe you dont associate saying that with something related to a University or a Vice-Chancellor. But this is a story of exactly that! The Vice Chancellor of De Montfort University Professor Dominic Shellard has taken up a mission to organise the worlds largest flashmob event to support local charities. Now, we know almost all universities do something or the other for charity so whats new? Well, we have Professor Dominic Shellard in a video(!) shot in a James Bond style (or any of your favourite spy style). Its cool, its new, and it makes me go: that is wicked! Professor Dominic Shellard on his Just Giving page says I have accepted the challenge to lead a lipdub/flashmob video on our campus in November 2012. I am inviting people from Leicester, and DMU staff and students, to be part of this challenge. Whilst raising money for a very worthwhile cause, we can also have a go at a world record attempt. So, save the date, Wednesday 7 November 2012 and come along to Magazine Square to help us do something amazing for charity. You can donate here. To be honest, we are not surprised. When in February I got to know that Professor Dominic Shellard is one of the 50 Britains New Radicals, I followed DMU VC to see the social interaction and networking. Along with the new ideas and plans that DMU is currently working on, I will be honest, I wish I was part of it. Anyways, enjoy the video below. We will be supporting this initiative and advertising it to all our readers. We support the event and the fact that DMU VC has tried to do something different. Your Digital Dirt May Have Just Gotten Messier Ive been writing about employers who Google candidates prior to interviewing them or hiring them for some time, but the stakes on using information found online to make a hiring decision just got higher.AOL recently reported that the Federal Trade Commission recently granted background check company Social Intelligence permission to search information from peoples social networking sites as part of routine background checks, stating the checks are in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.What this means is that any information from a social networking site posted in the public domain is fair game for a hiring authority to review. Soon a prospective employer may have a report containing your social media footprint the pictures, the Facebook likes, the tweets, the blog comments, and whatever else they can find. If they dig up anything that suggests questionable behavior, poor judgement, racism, or illegal activity, you could find yourself off the employers short list very quick ly.But its not all bad. A social search can also reveal information on a candidates charitable or volunteer activities, positive participation on industry blogs, and professional recognitions and distinctions. And services such as these may help regulate social media searches. Information that is Federally and State protected is redacted from the reports and the employer is never exposed to anything that is not legally allowable or not relevant for the hiring process. This makes the service enticing to employers since it makes them less vulnerable to discrimination charges and other legal risks.So nows probably a good time to review your social media profiles and either remove or make private anything you dont want an employer to potentially find. Maybe its time to stop tweeting with the #thingsthatirritateme Twitter hashtag and rethink the Facebook group you joined called Another Farmville invite and I will kill your animals and burn your crops.
